Behind the lens

Kirsten Fiscus began taking photos with her parent's digital camera as soon as she was able to figure out all the settings.

After graduating from high school she attended The University of Alabama for a B.A. in visual journalism. During college, she interned and freelanced for the Tuscaloosa News, covering UA softball and gymnastics, breaking news, feature assignments and portraits.

Fiscus graduated in August 2015 with a master's degree in community journalism from The University of Alabama.

After grad school, Fiscus took a full time position with The Anniston Star as the breaking news reporter, both writing and taking photos. She earned her first award for her coverage of a 2018 tornado that damaged Jacksonville State University.

In 2018, Fiscus took a breaking news position with the Montgomery Advertiser, writing more and photographing less. She still worked with the newspaper's two staff photographers shooting high school football and covering natural disasters for the USA Today network both with her notebook and her camera.

She was promoted to the breaking news beat in Nashville in 2022.
